K Line Group collaborates to jointly develop new LNG-fuelled ferry

K Line Group companies Kawasaki Kinkai Kisen Kaisha (K Line Kinkai) and Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (K Line) have agreed to work together on a joint study to aid the development of Japan's first liquefied natural gas (LNG) powered ferry.

The study will explore various specifications, engine types and technical verification considerations related to LNG handling.

It is also expected to help K Line Kinkai during the design phase of its new LNG-fuelled passenger ferry.

K Line Kinkai is already undertaking various research initiatives to develop a LNG-powered ferry, and the latest collaboration will help the company to speed up the study.

Additionally, the collaboration is expected to help launch Japan’s first passenger ferry powered by LNG, which is an environmentally friendly source of energy that could almost completely eliminate sulphur oxides (SOx) emissions, while also reducing nitrogen oxides (NOx) and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

"K Line Kinkai is already undertaking various research initiatives to develop a LNG-powered ferry, and the latest collaboration will help the company to speed up the study."

K Line Group also aims to fulfil its long-term environment management vision known as Environmental Vision 2050 via the new partnership.

K Line Group said in statement: “Having more than 40 years of experience in operation and management of liquefied gas carriers, we will continue to aim, with collective effort of K Line Group, for the realisation of being a business that enables a greater number of people around the world to enjoy the advantage of marine transportation characterized by a lower environmental load and higher efficiency, by means of marine fuels such as LNG and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) that are more environmentally friendly.”

K Line Group has also been undertaking research into the development of various types of LNG-fuelled vessels such as car carriers, tugboats and other LNG supply businesses.
