Wärtsilä to unveil new eco-friendly tug design portfolio
Wärtsilä is set to launch a new portfolio of tug designs under the HYTug series name.
The portfolio is expected to focus on developing environmentally sustainable tugs, which are usually deployed in and around harbours.
The Wärtsilä HYTug series has been developed using the company’s new HY hybrid propulsion solution.
Compared with traditional designs, the new models allow the installation of an engine that runs on less power, resulting in decreased emissions and a reduced environmental impact.
The design is also expected to reduce fuel bills and maintenance requirements, which will further help in cost savings.
Wärtsilä Marine Solutions Ship Design vice-president Riku-Pekka Hägg said: “We believe that new tugs will in future rely more and more on battery and hybrid propulsion, which very well complements today’s operational requirements.”
The company noted that its new tug designs are capable of offering low hull resistance, high towing/escort performance, sea-keeping, crew safety and comfort, as well as easy maintenance.
Each design is configured with diesel mechanical hybrid and diesel-electric hybrid propulsion. They also cover a 40t to 90t bollard pull range.
Wärtsilä WST series thrusters have been used in the new design, featuring large propeller diameters for efficient and high-performance propulsion.
Developed in collaboration with American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), BV and Lloyds Register classification societies, the designs have already received Approval-in-Principle (AiP) certification.
Wärtsilä has also developed LNGTug designs that feature liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel technology.
