Corvus Energy to provide energy storage system for NCA's new hybrid vessel

Corvus Energy has secured a deal to deliver a lithium ion-based energy storage system (ESS) for a new multipurpose hybrid vessel, which is set to be owned by the Norwegian Coastal Administration (NCA).

The deal has been awarded by Rolls-Royce, which will equip the new OV Ryvingen vessel with Corvus' Orca Energy ESS upon delivery of the system.

Corvus’ Orca Energy ESS features a capacity of 2,938kWh and is designed to allow ships to operate on battery power alone for several hours.

The batteries can also be used for various electrical requirements during docking and are rechargeable from on-shore power supplies at ports.

The complete equipment package from Corvus is also expected to reduce noise and vibration levels during operation.

"As with the Ryvingen, an increasing number of vessels will use the Orca energy storage system to deliver a greater proportion of the vessel’s power."

Corvus Energy Business Development senior vice-president Halvard Hauso said: “The electrification of vessels will see an increasing utilisation of higher battery capacities.

“As with the Ryvingen, an increasing number of vessels will use the Orca energy storage system to deliver a greater proportion of the vessel’s power.”

OV Ryvingen will be NCA’s second vessel to combine traditional diesel power with battery-powered operation upon completion, as well as the fourth vessel of the company’s fleet renewal programme, which will comprise a total of six to eight ships.

The coastal administration plans to deploy the 46.6m-long, 12m wide-vessel to perform operations relating to oil spill protection and shipping lane maintenance.

OV Ryvingen is slated to be delivered to NCA by the end of next year.
