Finnlines places €200m order for three hybrid ro-ro vessels
Grimaldi Group unit Finnlines has placed an order to purchase three ro-ro hybrid vessels from China’s Jinling shipyard for more than €200m.
The 238m-long vessels will be designed to carry 5,800 lane metres of cargo.
They will also be equipped with 5,600m² of car decks and around 300 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of capacity on the weather deck.
The vessels’ tank top and main deck will be shaped with strengthened bulkheads and will be free of pillar areas to accommodate paper and sto-ro concept.
Deliveries of the 17,400t vessels are scheduled to take place from 2020 to 2021.
Finnlines CEO Emanuele Grimaldi said: “We continue to modernise our fleet further. This investment will also help us to meet increased demand and enable us to serve our customers better.
“These green ro-ro vessels will be built taking all technological and environmental factors into account and thus will increase our energy efficiency further.
“The Finnish / Swedish ice-class vessels will also be powered by advanced engines to ensure the lowest fuel consumption and lowest carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.”
“These vessels will offer us the lowest possible fuel consumption and exhaust emissions and, again, is in line with our investments in sustainable development.”
The Finnish / Swedish ice-class vessels will also be powered by advanced engines to ensure the lowest fuel consumption and lowest carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.
They will also feature scrubbers to decrease the emission of sulphur and other particulate matters.
Designed by Finnlines in partnership with Nordic marine designer Knud E Hansen, the hybrid vessels will use fossil fuel during sailing and electricity while docking at the port to guarantee ‘zero emissions in port’.
Each of the vessels will also feature a lithium-ion battery bank, which will be recharged during sailing and will provide the electricity to the ship while at berth.
An innovative air lubrication system will be installed under the keel to create the bubble layers that will lower friction and hydrodynamic resistance.
The vessels will also be equipped with advanced integrated propeller-rudder systems to ensure optimised energy efficiency.
