Red Funnel replaces catering refrigeration units
UK-based ferry company Red Funnel has replaced its catering refrigeration units with Greenlogic systems in order to comply with new environmental legislation, which is expected to become effective in 2020.
Manufactured by Williams Refrigeration, the Greenlogic chillers were installed by Atlantic Refrigeration across Red Funnel’s ro-pax fleet of ferries.
The newly installed units feature an innovative refrigerant named R449A, which has zero Ozone Depleting Potential (ODP) and reduced Global Warming Potential (GWP).
According to Red Funnel, the units are designed to reduce 63.8% GWP and 64.4% carbon dioxide (CO2) across its fleet compared to the old units that used R404a refrigerant.
The Greenlogic units also require 40% less energy than the previous models.

A new compression tool was used to install the units to make the process environmentally friendly. The tool removed 90% of the braised hot works during the installation.
Red Funnel’s other environmental initiatives included a major trial of Biofuel to replace low-sulphur marine gas oil for main engines and generators.
The company also purchased electric-powered vehicles and replaced the Quayconnect bus with a new Euro 6-compliant vehicle.
Red Funnel, which recently secured the ISO 14001:2015 environmental standard, also intends to participate and provide financial support to Isle of Wight’s single-use plastic clean-up initiative on the beaches and estuaries in September.
