DNV GL has been selected by Hong-Kong based shipping line Seaspan to carry out the European Union (EU) monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) procedures for its entire vessel fleet.

The EU-MRV regulation came into force on 1 July 2015, and seeks to quantify and reduce carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions from shipping activities.

It also requires ship owners and operators to monitor, report and verify CO₂emissions on an annual basis for vessels larger than 5,000t calling at any EU and European Free Trade Association (EFTA) ports, including Norway and Iceland, by January next year.

Seaspan Projects and Technology director Ian Robinson said: “We have all the data necessary for verification in our fleet performance system; the fully digital approach of DNV GL allows for our existing data streams to connect directly into DNV GL’s MRV Engine to be managed automatically.

“This approach improves efficiency and performance, while technology does the heavy lifting of reporting.”

DNV GL is continuously monitoring the flow of information with its new ECO Insight data quality module, which has been subscribed to by Seaspan.

The module is also designed to check incoming data from vessels and allows for immediate corrective action if required.

Additionally, it is capable of supporting the incoming IMO-DCS scheme, which will become effective a year after the EU-MRV regulation.

DNV GL previously received an accreditation from German accreditation body DAkkS to verify compliance with the EU MRV regulation in April.
